The Social Aspects of Top Performing Video Games

Our latest ongoing research into the video gaming sector has uncovered some interesting trends. The top three best-selling games for Q3 2008 were Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Grand Theft Auto. Two out of those three are multi-purpose games that appeal to a wider age and gender bracket. Additionally, when comparing the total revenues for video games since 2006, Guitar Hero-another multi-purpose game-ranked in the top three. Consumers seem to prefer multi-player/new control-interface games over traditional single-player games.

Wii Fit is a good example. Not only can it be played a group of people, but it also involves more physical interaction and is a fun way to stay in shape. In comparison to more traditional games, Wii Fit nearly closes the gender gap with 48% female purchasers from the eBay platform. Also, despite its very recent release in April and May 2008, total sales of this game alone have surpassed the total sales for any other individual game on the eBay platform.

Even in an upcoming economic recession, video games sales might experience an increase. These non-traditional games fulfill different aspects of the leisure experience. For example, Guitar Hero becomes a way to listen to music, while also creating a new air guitar experience; Rock Band, another high selling game that comes complete with a microphone, allows friends to come together to play in a band; and Mario Kart Wii draws people together to fulfill a groups' competitive urges.

How well these sales will do during this Christmas season in comparison to 2007 is a question that remains to be answered. We at Advanced are monitoring our daily data for video games sales, and look forward to watching the how the eBay video game market unfolds.
